Nippon Paper Industries #2 PM Shutdown & #3 PM Wrap Line Installation
Port Angeles, WA

Nippon Paper Project Construction Team

JH Kelly worked with AMEC Engineering in the pre-construction phase for the #2 PM shut down to provide value engineering and constructabiltiy reviews through development of the project scope,  detailed  estimate  and  schedule.

The work scope included basement excavation and installation of pin piling while the machine was in operation to shorten the down time duration. We replaced seven dryer cans, installed new felt stretch mechanisms, and replaced the press section from the sole plate up.

This significant mechanical and piping rebuild lasted three months and was completed with a ten-day machine outage shortened from the originally scheduled 14-day down.

For the #3 PM Wrap Line Installation project, we kept original wrap line in-service, built a new wrap line to the west of the machine, set sole plates, completed installation of conveyor, lowering scoops, wrapper dispenser, back stands, piping, reject turntables, label applicators, inner and outer headracks, and label mister. The project had a one month pre-down duration with six-day machine down from an originally scheduled 10-day down.

Special points of interest:
  • Shortened scheduled machine downs by four days each
