Bechtel River Protection Project
Hanford, WA

Process Stainless Piping Spool for Vitrification Project

JH Kelly was awarded a purchase order to provide fabricated pipe spools for the River Protection Project at Hanford, Washington. This project, managed by Bechtel National for the United States Department of Energy, is intended to insure that the Columbia River is protected from contamination of radioactive materials buried at the Hanford site. Located in Southwest Washington, Hanford played a major role in the development and production of Cold War weapons systems. The remnants, stored underground for over 40 years, will now be processed and stored safely using a process called "vitrification."

JH Kelly's scope of supply for this project included the fabrication of 304L, 316L and Hastelloy pipe spools in sizes 1/2" through 18" with wall thicknesses ranging from Schedule 10 to Schedule 80. The stringent quality requirements of this project require "verbatim" compliance to project drawings and specifications. These exacting requirements demand attention to detail and rigorous work and inspection processes; including individual spool work packages, material traceability and radiographic inspection. The 800 spools assembled in our Longview, WA fabrication facility were used in each of the five buildings that are part of the vitrification process. Perhaps more importantly, the spools serve to protect one of the Northwest's great treasures: the Columbia River.

Special points of interest:
  • 800+ spools assembled at Longview, WA facility
  • 304L, 316L and Hallestoy pipe spools
  • Verbatim compliance
