JH Kelly, LLC announced today that it had reached substantial mechanical completion at Oregon State University’s LEED Platinum-registered Energy Center in Corvallis, Oregon. The new facility has a combined heat and power capacity of 5.5MW of electricity and 250,000 pounds per hour of steam generation.

Replacing a plant built in the 1920s, OSU expects the new energy center to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 38%, lower transmission losses by generating about 50% of OSU’s electricity on site, and reduce water consumption through rainwater capture and modernized systems. The plant will be utilized by the university as a teaching resource.

JH Kelly was the primary mechanical subcontractor for Andersen Construction and assisted with equipment setting for the power island consisting of a combustion turbine, steam turbine, heat recovery steam generator, and two gas-fired auxiliary boilers. The scope of work included procurement and installation of all balance of plant piping, instrumentation, and equipment including pumps, tanks, pressure vessels, water treatment, and cooling towers. Piping systems included steam, condensate gas, fuel oil, boiler feedwater, makeup water and blowdown.

DA Looking N cad1 JH Kelly utilized a 3D BIM coordination process to fully model the project. This effort reduced field routing conflicts, allowed for increased off-site fabrication, and enhanced the university’s and related firms’ ability to provide input for layout and space planning.

“JH Kelly is honored to be part of a team that furthered OSU’s goal to become a climate neutral campus,” said Mason Evans, JH Kelly president.

The OSU Energy Center follows several other successful district campus energy projects JH Kelly has performed including Portland State University, Washington State University, and Northern Arizona University.
