This new facility consists of five 1500-ton centrifugal chillers, twelve 600-ton induced draft cooling towers, and 21 centrifugal pumps ranging up to 400 horsepower. With the Matthew Knight Arena causing significant additional demand on the campus chilled water system and aging existing utilities, the University decided to expand its chilled water capacity while maximizing energy efficiency. Greenfield construction of the Central Power Station (CPS) building that houses the combined 7,500 tons of cooling capacity was completed in six months. The project connects to and supplies the nearly three miles of underground tunnel piping providing chilled water for the entire campus. JHK's ability to effectively execute 3D BIM coordination, extensive pre-fabrication, and seasoned central utility plant team were instrumental in successfully executing this project on schedule.
