PSU Campus Loop

Portland, Oregon

The Campus Loop Project (Phase 1) was the first phase of a new chilled water and low-pressure steam distribution system serving the main Portland State University campus with redundant services from separate utility plants located throughout the campus. It centralizes control systems, combines individual mechanical unit capacities from different campus buildings, and reduces overall energy costs. JHK performed the sequenced demolition of existing systems within several existing campus buildings, tunnels and sky bridges, as well as the coordinated installation of new larger mains within those same areas without impact to PSU activities. Also completed was the upgrade of the Cramer Hall chiller plant, including removal of existing chillers and associated equipment, and installation of a new chiller, heat exchanger, and all associated equipment and controls. In the final phase (Phase 2), JHK performed all of the new distribution piping through new utility tunnels, installed under the campus streets and the Park Blocks, as well as retrofitting existing building services to connect to these new distribution mains.
