Portland State University – Campus Loop Phase 1

Working direct for Portland State University in Portland, Oregon, JH Kelly was awarded services to demolish and removed all associated equipment with the existing Central Utility Plant.  This included chillers and pumps in the basement CUP, and called for replacement of new equipment installation with economizing components.  The second part of scope included demolition and removal of the old chilled water and steam piping through the university building basements and tunnel systems, and replace with newer, larger piping systems to establish a central plant looped system.

This 12 month project was a lump sum contract, and included 8 other bidders before being awarded the contract.  Extensive pre-planning made this project a success, including the use of P6 Look Ahead schedules, selective off-shift hours of work which minimized disruptions, and a proposed use of mixed groove and welded piping was accepted by the Owner and greatly improved installation productivity.

A great project with a great owner, producing great results for students to function and learn better.  Kudos to the project teams!
