Portland International Airport Terminal Balancing Concourse E Extension

The Portland International Airport (PDX) Terminal Balancing Concourse E Extension project was the first major construction project to be completed during “PDX Next,” the five-year investment plan to improve PDX.

The $190 million multi-phased expansion, renovation and rebalancing project involved 192,756 square feet and helped equalize the number of passengers flying out of the north and south sides of PDX. Concourse E extension added about 810 feet, or 152,000 square feet, to the concourse.

Concourse E features six new gates for Southwest Airlines, seven new pedestrian boarding bridges, new shops, restaurants and additional amenities to help improve airline operational spaces. The new space opened to the public in July 2020 and is expected to achieve LEED Gold certification.

As part of the scope, there was a large amount of existing apron north of the extension that was demolished and re-paved to meet FAA specifications.

Included in the apron work were underground utilities that served the building and a new aviation fuel main line extension to hydrants that service the planes at each gate.

Also included in the scope were enabling projects which included reroofing the existing Concourse E and upgrading the E1 sanitary sewer lift station and power feeders.
