Project ProfileSmurfit-Stone Container HVLC Collection Project Missoula, MT
JH Kelly was awarded the contract to upgrade Smurfit-Stone Containers Missoula, Montana mill HVLC (High Volume Low Concentration) gas collection system per the Clean Air Act regulations enacted by the EPA. The project consisted of collecting the HVLC gasses from the eight washers and filtrate tanks and, through the use of new blowers, transport the gas to the DFO (Direct Fired Oxidizer) for treatment. JHK was responsible for the demolition of the old pipe and equipment, fabrication of new piping and steel, and installation of all piping, steel, concrete, equipment and instrumentation. The project was approximately three months in duration and culminated with a 12-day shutdown. Pre-shutdown activities included most of the steel, exterior piping and equipment setting. Due to the short outage duration and limited space, JHK was able to pre-install all shower piping and pneumatic tubing on the fiberglass hoods and saved countless shutdown hours and eliminated multiple safety risks. JHK had a crew of 55 workers per shift around the clock during the outage to safely complete (zero recordable injuries) the project on time and at budget. During course of this project, JHK installed eight new fiberglass gullwing washer hoods, 50 tons of steel, 6500 lf of pipe, eight shower assemblies, 2600 lf of tubing, two overhead cranes, eight doctor fans, two booster fans, one gas cooler, one burner and 100 yards of concrete. Special points of interest: - Clean Air Act upgrades
