Weyerhaeuser Company #10 Boiler Rebuild
Longview, WA

Newly Installed Soot Blowers Pre-shut Down Piping Tie-in

In August 2001 Weyerhaeuser awarded the Balance of Plant work, for the rebuild of #10 Boiler, to JH Kelly’s mechanical and electrical divisions. The scope included the structural reinforcing of the existing building, new Black Liquor supply and return pipe (from the Concentrator area to the Black Liquor Ring Header), temporary power for the outage, refeeding Sootblower power and controls, and essentially all mechanical and piping work that was not associated with the rebuilding components of the #10 Boiler.

Part of the scope involved structural reinforcement of the existing building. This effort started in December 2001 and completed in August 2002, consuming over 11,000 man-hours and involved moving numerous pieces of steel plate for column reinforcing and new bracing and demolition of materials around the inside of the #10 Boiler building, all while the Boiler remained operational.

In addition, JH Kelly performed most of the crucial work during an early outage. During this time, JH Kelly was able to complete 55 tieins, with little advanced planning.

As a result, this work was removed from the original planned July 2002 Shutdown, substantially reducing the JH Kelly workforce for that month. It also opened up additional work opportunities that could be completed in the winter and spring of 2002, instead of during the main outage.

Kelly Electric, JH Kelly’s electrical division, saved Weyerhaeuser hundreds of thousands of dollars by combining routings from control panels and individual devices. This included help in developing the temporary scheme for the Boiler Erectors temporary requirements during the outage.
